From 21 to 29 of August 2021 nature conservation brigade “Atanasovsko lake” gathered nearly 50 volunteers for the 32nd time. Its main goal was to help providing a better nesting environment for the birds in the area by maintaining and repairing the existing infrastructure.
For the sixth year in a row Dalmatian pelicans nesting in Persina Nature Park had a successful breeding season. It is completely delightful that in 2021 the pelicans occupied all three wooden platforms build for them in the marshes on Persin Island. 64 pairs of Dalmatian pelicans occupied the two platforms in Peschina swamp and raised successfully 80 young birds. The third platform in Dead Marsh marsh was occupied by 24 pairs of pelicans which raised 25 young birds.
The first nature protection festival dedicated to the Dalmatian Pelican, organized by Persina Nature Park Directorate, has passed. The event took place on July 2 and 3 in front of the Visitor Centre of the park with a rich and interesting program.
In early June, two artificial breeding platforms for Dalmatian pelicans were installed in the Danube Biosphere Reserve in Ukraine as part of the “Pelican Way of LIFE” project.
During the fourth Southeastern European Pelican Census simultaneous measures were taken in many European countries to count two globally endangered species – Great white and Dalmatian pelicans. In Ukraine the counts took place on May 15-21 as part of the “Pelican Way of LIFE” project, being implemented in our country by Rewilding Ukraine in cooperation with the Danube Biosphere Reserve (DBR).
The fourth Southeastern European Pelican Census took place on 15th May 2021. A new nesting colony of the endangered Dalmatian pelican has been settled in Bulgaria. The birds occupied the artificial island in Nature 2000 area “Kalimok Complex“ near the city of Tutrakan. This is the third nesting colony of the species in Bulgaria in addition to those in Serbarna lake and Persin island (Belene).

A record number of Dalmatian pelicans nest on the two wooden platforms in the Peschina swamp on the Persin Island. This was established during the regular monitoring by the experts from the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and the Persina Nature Park Directorate. On March 12, the number of nesting pairs of Dalmatian pelicans in the Peschina swamp was 64, which is an absolute record compared to previous years.
On February 22nd, a team of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) successfully trapped and tagged with a satellite transmitter a Dalmatian Pelican in the area of Atanasovsko Lake near Burgas. This is the first Dalmatian pelican with a transmitter in Bulgaria.
