New breeding platform for pelicans in Persina Nature Park

December 27, 2023

In a strategic move, Persina Nature Park has initiated the construction of a new nesting platform for Dalmatian pelicans in Peschina marsh on Persin Island. The decision follows the destruction of two existing platforms during autumn, attributed to adverse weather conditions.

The construction aims to provide a suitable nesting space for the pelicans by February, aligning with the commencement of their breeding season. Crafted from floating blocks and wood, the platforms will be designed with reeds to mimic a natural environment, offering comfort to the pelicans.

The use of artificial islands has proven effective, as Dalmatian pelicans willingly occupy these protected and undisturbed spaces. During the breeding season, the platforms play a crucial role in shielding the pelicans from potential predators and disturbances.

In its eighth consecutive year, the Dalmatian Pelicans in Persina Nature Park achieved successful breeding in 2023. All three wooden platforms provided were occupied, with Peschina Marsh accommodating 35 pairs that successfully raised 48 chicks.

Ensuring the undisturbed nesting of the pelicans is vital, given their susceptibility to disruptions. The newly constructed platform serves as an isolated island surrounded by water, replicating the natural conditions for these birds.

The conservation activities on the Dalmatian Pelican are carried out in the framework of the international initiative “Pelican Way of LIFE” funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union and Arcadia Foundation, and with the assistance in Bulgaria of the Whitley Fund for Nature.
